The first candle

Last year my family started a tradition...I made a Advent wreath (using the wooden wreath form my son had made) which has four candles~ one for each week of Advent. Each Sunday, we lit the candle for that week. This year we are keeping this new tradition. And this year, it was my oldest daughter who finished a wreath form for us, that she made at church.

This week I will dig out the wreath I made last year and put it together in time for next week's candle...so for now we have a "makeshift candle"...

Today we celebrate the first candle of Advent by lighting the first candle. This is
the Prophecy candle, which represents
the promise of a Messiah foretold by God's prophets.

"For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."
~ Isaiah 9: 6

Of the Father's love begotten

"Of the Father's love begotten, Ere the worlds began to be,
He is Alpha and Omega, He the Source, the Ending He,
Of the things that are, that have been, And that future years shall see,
Evermore and evermore!

O ye heights of heaven, adore Him; Angel hosts, His praises sing;
Powers, dominions, bow before Him, And extol our God and King;
Let no tongue on earth be silent, Every voice in concert ring,
Evermore and evermore!

Christ, to Thee with God the Father, And, O Holy Ghost, to Thee,
Hymn and chant and high thanksgiving And unwearied praises be:
Honor, glory, and dominion, And eternal victory,
Evermore and evermore!"

Amen.

I think its wonderful that your kids enjoy advent so much that they helped design the wooden wreath! My niece and nephew are just terrific! The poem was great and I gotta say I am drooling over the candle with moss around it. You are so, so creative!

I just finished two pieces of the fudge you made for Dad...he didn't mind me eating it and I couldn't stop myself, lol.

This post brings back so many memories for me. The church that I grew up in participated in this tradition. At the pulpit was the candles and each Sunday someone was chosen to read what the candle represented, say a prayer, then light the candle. I was always chosen every year. It was such an honor for me!

That's great that your kids have made their own advent candle holders!

I just love traditions and they mean so much to our children as they grow.

I've been in and out of blogland, but was so happy to see your comment.

I'm so looking forward to when Anna Claire gets older to start the tradition of the advent calendar and wreath!

Great tradition Jenni!!

Sorry it took me so long to respond to your comment...been way to busy!! The paint is called beeswax and is from Lowes. The walls have been that color for nine years!! I still have not grown tired of it. Goes good with anything!

Hope your doing good. We got our first snow storm last night. It's gorgeous, but only in the month of December. After that I hate its guts!! Ha

Have a great weekend!

Hey Jenni!

Actually the paint is Behr. I'm pretty sure it's from Lowes, but possibly Home Depot?? We spend so much time at both stores I loose track of what's from where!

Have a great week!
